Friday, May 04, 2007 New job - risk analytics Pardon my slowness in updating my blog. I must say I have been pretty consistent up till now.. Seriously, now, it's almost as though i have to remind myself i HAVE TO do it and make myself do it.. It's not that I do not enjoy it anymore, it's more like having to find time to do it. Sigh, i'm getting suck into the world that uses 'i'm busy' to justify my 'lack of actions'.. *smacks myself awake* =P haha.. after saying all that, actually i think it's just cos i hv to go to work earlier & i usually like updating my blog in the mornings while i'm eating bfast.. no such luxury now!Well well well, my new co-op job.. Honestly, I wasn't going in with much high expectations. I was expecting boring.. cos it did sound boring. lotsa number crunching and stats. but hmm, so far, i think it's quite interesting n challenging.Basically, my department assess the company's entire investments' risk. & it has like the most sophisticated risk system in the entire canada.. I use like 5 different programs & they repeatedly draw us charts of process flows to help us understand the process. With all the parent portfolio, child portfolio, benchmarks, active no.s, inactive screen, curves etc etc.. and we hv to monitor big changes and investigate whether the risk changes are legitimate. Besides just #s, we have exposure to the actual understanding of the market as well, which is what i wanted, which is good.. but oh my, i need to read up more.. feel so lost! Besides that, this co-op term is definitely different from the prev one.. Firstly, there's like a whole bunch of co-op students instead of me being just the only one. Somehow, it's a good thing.. It's kinda fun, we hv lunch together and if i hv questions i can ask them instead of bugging supervisors all the time. But on the other hand, i dun really quite know how to handle it. I find myself pressured/stressed and i keep feeling i'm being compared to the other co-op student.. And ya, most co-op students there are the typical mgmt co-op student stereotype.. (only some of u will know wat i mean) haha, well, basically, the super competitve type.. and the employers certainly do hv high expectations n they remind us that quite often.. llalaa.. what else? well, i work pretty long hours.. hence, the exhaustion. but on the bright side, i'm earning more money.. otpp treats its employees pretty well.. we have quite a few lunch n learns too.. & really, it's exactly that.. they provide lunch n u learn while u eat.. which is pretty cool. u get good food, although it's basically sandwiches.. but its good sandwiches.. anyways, free food is always good. U know, no matter how nice ppl are, corporate culture does make a huge difference in your working environment.. it kinda determines the way u do things, wat is right, wat is wrong etc. Kinda interesting. I'll give u more updates about my job as it goes.. Lotsa work to do is a good thing, time flies by just like that.. cant believe i'm already 2 weeks into the job.. ahh~ i dun wan summer to end! hahaha.. and it hasnt even started.. brrr... *btw, i'm going to be quite general when i'm talking about my job.. The compliance and legal issues are too complicated & i dunwanna get tangled into that.. apparently they are super strict abt those stuff nowadays.. Post a Comment |
